FAQ's

  • We are a service run by vets for vets. We provide advice on all things related to exotic animal medicine, whether that be case advice, common drug doses or interpreting diagnostics. We are here to help you with any exotic animal that presents to your clinic.

  • The Exotic Animal Vet is run by Dr Kelly Giles, who graduated from Murdoch University in 2016 with first class honours. Since 2016, Dr Kelly has worked exclusively with exotic animals and has gained additional qualifications in this field, including her Memberships in Avian Medicine & Surgery. Her career has lead her to working with many amazing animals - from Grey Nurse sharks and endangered pig-nosed turtles, to wedge-tailed eagles and koalas. Day-to-day Dr Kelly sees a range of parrots, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, reptiles and aquatic animals as a clinical veterinarian. Outside of the clinic, she teaches at Murdoch University and has published two papers in rabbit medicine.

Dr Kelly is currently based in Canberra, Australia.

  • Great question. There are a few ways you can get in contact with us. We run a phone service 7 days a week, between the hours of 7pm-12am (AEST) for any afterhours cases you may see. For less urgent cases, you can reach us by emailing theexoticanimalvet@gmail.com.

  • No. At this stage we are a service open to veterinary professionals only.

  • Between the hours of 7pm-12am, the best way to reach us for urgent cases is by phone (0492 137 381). We can then decide whether we can help over the phone ($50), or if you would prefer we visit in person. The cost of an after-hours consult is $340, which includes the call-in fee.

  • In-person visits for after-hours consults are arranged by phone or email. Once we arrive, we will use one of your rooms to consult with the client and provide treatment options. We will use your facilities and medications, which can be charged to the client as you normally would. From there, we can help you formulate a hospital plan for overnight care. Finally, we can help arrange transfer to an exotic veterinary clinic, when they open following day.

We charge a flat fee of $340 for this service, which you can choose to pass onto your client. This fee can take the place of your clinic’s normal consult fee, making our service a very affordable after-hours option for owners of exotic animals.

  • When you contact us we will request your email. After we have assisted you by phone, email or in-person, we will email you an invoice. At this stage, The Exotic Animal Vet accepts direct bank transfers only.
